FRIENDS

I go to Facebook..You go to Facebook..Everyone goes to Facebook.  Everyone is every one's friend.  The term "friend" is bounced around and loosely used on the social networks.  But are the "friends" really your friends?  Do you know them?  Have you ever met them?  Do you know what your "friends" are like or how they would be in good times or bad?  I sure don't.  I have only family and a few trusted individuals tagged as friends.  Even then, I wonder about a few of them!!

There isn't anything wrong in having lots of friends on Facebook.  It is generally a fun place to visit and hang out.  But what is the true meaning of friend?  Is it just in seeing how many people you can sign up?  And how much of your time and day revolves around this one particular website of "friends?"  What about you; are you a good "friend?"

"Instead of a friend become not an enemy to your neighbor.  A sweet word multiplies friends and appeases enemies and a gracious tongue in a good man abounds.  Be at peace with many, but let one of a thousand be your counselor.  If you would get a friend try him before you take him, and do not credit him easily.  For there is a friend for his own occasion and he will not abide in time of your trouble.  And there is a friend that turns to  enmity.   And there is a friend that will disclose hatred and  strife and reproaches:  and there is a friend, a companion at the table who will not abide in the day of distress.  A faithful friend is a strong defense and he that has found him has found a treasure.  Nothing can be compared to a faithful friend and no weight of gold and silver is able to countervail the goodness of his fidelity. A faithful friend is the medicine of life and immortality: and they that fear the Lord shall find Him.  He that fears God will likewise have good friendships: because according to Him  shall his friend  be"

This is from Ecclus. V1: 1-17.
(I need to add this amendment because this book is not found in most Protestant Bibles so you would need a Catholic Bible to find it under the Book of Sarach)

I have taken the liberty of updating a few words because some of it is Old English and archaic.  It is found in the Old Testament should anyone care to look it up and read it.  Reading it several times will reveal how wise and profound the passage is, even in theses modern times.  The message is clear:  "Chose your friends wisely."

There isn't anything wrong with having Facebook friends.  If they give you comfort in times of trouble they are not to be scoffed.  If they offer platitudes that brighten your day with a little ray of sunshine on a cloudy day, then soak it up and enjoy the good intentions of kind words.

Just  remember...Don't forget who your really, really true FRIEND is and HE is seldom on Facebook, but hopefully is HE is in the SPIRIT of Facebook.

P. S.  I also spend too much time on Facbook.  Mia Culpa.

When it comes to facebook I only friend those that I know. I can literally tell people how I know each person. Now compare that to some of my friends who have 500 friends, is that necessarily a good thing? I mean it is great to friend a bunch of people but if you do not know them it can create a dangerous situation. It is definitely something to think about. Then there is that saying "Be close to your friends but be even closer to your enemies".

Greetings!!

I currently have 166 friends on facebook. I do personally know about 90 - 95% of them, so I guess that is a good thing. LOL. Some I know better than others and I am closer to some than others. I guess the same is true in real life off the internet. We have friends we are closer to than others.

I really like your post, it gives us pause to think.

I am finally done with the move Mabel and now just have unpacking to do. I can take my time with that though. So many things on my plate right now. I am becoming very busy with ministry work with one of the churches I am affiliated with and am really enjoying that. :-)

I have some errands to run today and then will be doing some unpacking of kitchen items. Life is good even though it is not perfect, LOL.

Hope all is well with you!
Love, Alice
