GREEN LAND

The rain came and the garden is taking off. The lettuce and radishes are peeking their little green heads above the dirt and a few Lima beans are sneaking up here and there. I can't wait for a good BLT.. I guess I better get some tomato plants in or let Chuck get them in for me. His cabbage is growing well, too.. I am looking froward to bucket potatoes later in the season.

I spent too much time looking for the chuck to my drill. I know I have it somewhere, but may have to buy another until I find it. That is what happens when you don't put things away properly. I have lots of empty peanut cans so I will start seperating screws, nuts, bolts and nails. I have been just tossing stuff into a box. I am too sloppy about my tools..or maybe too forgetful.

I would like to hang some hooks in the backroom to hang my electric cords on. I have 4 nice hooks that I saved from a cloths tree. It was forever falling over, cloths and all. I decommissioned it and saved the hooks and screws. I think I can drill new holes using both hands...if I can just find the chuck and put a smaller bit on the drill.

Chuck came and mowed the yard just before the rain came down again. My yard looks like an island in a sea of grass and weeds. My neighbors do not mow very often or ever. I had Chuck put the grass catcher on and put a load of chopped grass into the chicken run. Happy little creatures, were they. They soon had it scratched up and spread all over like a nice green carpet.
It smelled nice, too. This is the first night that I will not close them in and hope for the best.

My arm is still bothering me from my attempt to start the mower yesterday. I won't try that again. It is just that I want to get things done and now have to wait on others. If you have spent your life doing stuff when you wanted and not relying on people to come and do things according to their time scheduling...well, darn!

This a night I think I will go to bed early. Rainy weather is good sleeping weather. I won't have to get up early to let the chickens out either because they will allready be able to get into the run and hunt bugs.

LOSERS WEEPERS

Tell me what you think. If you found a fair amount of money on the floor of a public bathroom in a restaurant would you keep it without making even the slightest effort to find the person that lost it? The wife of the my handyman has done just that and it disturbs me. She said if you turn it in the employees "would just split it up among themselves." Not necessarily, me thinks. Not everyone is this old world is dishonest. Also, you can report the find and leave your number and see if anyone who calls can come up with the correct amount found and/ or denominations. When I mentioned this I simply got a cold stare and a remark of "You don't know these kinds of people." I guess she was implying that all those people in that area were of less calibre than she.

The reason it disturbs me is that I am thinking it may have been someones rent or utility money. Even worse, it could have been taking the food out of some child's mouth. It might have been money dropped by a vendor who will have to make it good.

Years ago my mother had $20.00 vanish from her pocketbook. I remember how frantic she was and it did take groceries off the our table. We were very poor due to my Father's ill health and $20.00 was a lot of money in the '60's to poor people.

I know that(blank) has not been getting a lot of business, but (blank) always has enough money for cigarettes. They manage to go out to eat and or continue to have good meals at home, as desired. Did she really need that money? I don't think so. It wasn't like finding a stray $1.00 bill or even a $5.00 dollars. It was equal to a paycheck and that bothers me. It may have been some elderly person's S.S check. When I mentioned this I was told that S.S. checks were not out yet. Not true because anyone with direct deposit got their checks several days ago.

Am I wrong to be bothered by this? I don't believe in that old "Finders Keepers" rote. That is kid stuff. I know if I lost my check or even part of it I would be in a bad financial bind. My Mother didn't raise me like that and according to (blank) she wasn't raised that way, either.

I tried to start the lawn mower with one hand/arm and couldn't do it. Instead, I just about pulled my arm off. I know its going to hurt tonight 'cause it already does. So, I tried with my left arm and hand, but just didn't have the strength to get it started. I put the mower away. I just wanted to give the little chickens some nice fresh greenery.

CHICKEN CHASING

The rain came down and the seeds came up, even the bucket potatoes are sprouting. We needed the moisture after a dry week. Now the humidity is on the rise and the mosquitoes are starting to be annoying.

Two little chickens kept getting out and I have been chasing them up and down the alley in the rain. The cat was slinking about and I didn't want the fat cat to get to them first. The larger chicks are content to stay in their new home where they are now acclimated. Those two wee ones want to explore the world outside the fence and not stay home.

I had to go to Sears today so I took myself to the Chinese Restaurant too. Yum, beats cooking in this now warmer weather.

I just found out I was supposed to get a permit for the erection of Chicken Condo. No one told me: I didn't ask and I ain't telling. The Condo looks like it has always been there as it was constructed from recycled materials. You know its all about money and taxes for the city coffers, anyway.

It seems like everyone is in a near panic over the Swine Flu. There is a lot of disinformation being written by boogers. I didn't pay attention to the last "pandemic" other than I had to make up 27 sick trays in one eve and deliver the meals. That was back when one person got to do it all. That was not a fun evening, as I recall. I am a believer in lots of liquids and good food. Most illnesses will resolve and go away unless there are other factors to be considered.

I do not lead an exciting life unless you count chasing chickens in the rain, so I will close.

CHARACTER

What kind of character do you have? I have a character right across the ally. He is 7 years old. He is a non-stop talker and rattles along faster than a miniature machine gun. I don't understand half of what he says and I am sure he is giving me some of the family secrets, but I let him jabber away all he wants.

He has discovered "chickens" and has set up a lawn chair right across the service ally so he can watch the little chickens fly. He wants to know when they will start to lay eggs. I think he is expecting an emanate appearance of eggs and is keeping vigil for their arrival. He has a bit of await. In the meantime he is talking my ears off.

Fifteen years ago his uncle Josh was climbing over my fence and chasing my pet ducks. Looks like Little Jabber bBox will soon being the same thing. His Grandmother, who is raising him, isn't so enamored with the chickens, but she let him hang out with the chicks. In ten years he will be doing the same thing: hanging out with the chicks.

I went the farm store to get green peppers. Oooops, I made a mistake. They are hot peppers. Well, they are planted, anyway. My taters in a bucket are sprouting. I think I will do another bucket. Potatoes do not do well here because of the heavy clay soil so I thought I might try to grow them in a bucket or two. I got really good buckets from the barbecue place for 50 cents a piece and they have been just laying around.

I bought another waterer for the chickens because the waterier they have heats up in the daytime. The new waterer is inside the coop where it is cooler. The chicks, which are mostly beyond chick stage, seem to like their condo. They took to roosting right away. They went nuts over worms, grass and grubs. What a laugh they are, chasing each other trying to steal a little morsel.

We are supposed to get some rain tonight. It will be just in time to water the garden. If it doesn't rain...as they keep predicting...I will go get some more peppers..the sweet kind.

I made onion/potato soup today from a large volunteer onion and odds and ends of leftovers. Its a little thin(too much liquid), but very flavorful. I tend to experiment when cooking and hope for the best.

WIRED

I now have chicken wire and it is in place. Now to get those little creatures to get into the coop.

No posting on Sunday.

PENNY CRUSESADE

I am posting this early so that I don't forget the idea that popped up into my shriveling gray matter as I was drinking my morning "stimulus." "We, The People," should have a Penny Crusade. After all, isn't that how "We The People" erected the Statue Of Liberty in New York Harbor?

Obama was right in one sense. "It is time for change." We can change this nation, but it must come from us, the little peons that keep America grinding along. We just need to grease the wheels a little bit. We are a "Can Do" working class of people that will save this county, not those "Ding Dongs" that do not have a clue of how it feels to have sweat on their brows or build callouses on their hands. Those Ding Dongs, being the very ones of Wall Street and Washington, DC. are the very Ding Dongs got us into this money mess; how can they get us out without a continuation of "STUPID." "They" can not.

Here is what I propose. Raid your penny jars and piggy banks. Look under your couch cushions and check the ash trays in your car. Roll your pennies and take them to the bank. Deposit you pennies into a checking account, savings account or just go buy a burger or salad. Putting... REAL... coinage back into the system will be a better stimulus package than having all that funny money circulating around and gathering more economic germs.

Almost every one has a penny jar. I have one and you probably do, too. I always figured if I had a jar full of change or pennies I would never be broke. Occasionally I would roll my pennies and go spend the cash. Pennies are copper and copper is valuable. Most banks would love to have your pennies. If every American were to roll their pennies and raid their piggy banks it would probably shock the political pirates that are holding the common man, woman and child hostage. Just picture the look on some poor tellers' face if you came in the bank with about five bucks worth of pennies!! They will roll them for you for a small charge, but we are a DYI kind of people.

If everyone were to put real coinage back into the system it would surprise the dickens out of the advocates of "Change." "WE, THE PEOPLE" can put this nation right again and create "CHANGE." It must come from us, not the manipulators of mayhem and disaster.

So, tell your neighbors, family and friends, WE HAVE DECLARED WAR ON FINANCIAL FIASCOES!!! Pass this message around if you wish or even e-mail it. Thus far, we..the little Americans who still salute the flag, have not done much concrete about what is continuing to take place in the banking and political system..we can and should START NOW with a Penny Crusade! TEA PARTIES are great, but action is better!

Note that I said pennies, not your silver coinage. You can do that, too, if you want. Also, eat your heart out Genn Beck..I thought of it first...LOA'S!!! He can use this if he happens to run across this blog.

WRITING LESSONS

Its hard to write something new every day. Some blogs are disappearing or are sparsely posted. Some are repeats of old news or older posts. It must be really hard for those that post for the advertising fees they garner. Well, bloggers generally don't get rich from advertiser unless they are unique or fill a certain niche.

But I persist for friends and family. Posting keeps us in contact and lets us know the life is still an experience.

Today I looked at at new car. It is hard for me to get in and out of my van with one really functional hand and arm. I looked, but didn't buy. My van is paid for and only has 32.000 miles on it. At my present age and income I really don't want car payments. Besides, as pretty as a new car can be, I had more trouble getting in and out of that little Ford than I do with my van. You can't haul chicken feed in a pretty little car either.

As usual I fell asleep halfway through the Glenn Beck show. In the meantime Chuck must have come by and fed the feathered fiends. When I went out to feed them their feeder was full and the water had been emptied and refilled. That is good because I can not lift the 3 gallon water container.

I would like to get rid of the automobiles that I do have. I have a 1960 4 door, 6 cylinder stick shift Rambler deluxe. People want it, but want it for nothing or next to nothing. No sale. Go away. If I were to sell it I would buy a nice camera and post ugly chickens pictures on my blog. Or maybe a shot of one of the Paddle Wheelers that ply the Ohio in the summer time. Or maybe I wouldn't figure out how to go about all that.

Today has been a kind of Ice Tea day with the temperature in the low 80's and low humidity. Time to get the fans out.

RAMBLINGS

Here is an odd observation. They very next day after I posted about fluorescent light bulbs
Glenn Beck had a segment on his show about fluorescent bulbs. He did a better job than I did, but now I know why my bulbs don't last; MADE IN CHINA..crap.

The Bean Soup turned out pretty well. I have eaten a big bowl of it and put about 3 quarts into the freezer, in recycled containers.

This morning I planted a potato in a bucket. I drilled holes into an old food bucket. It was kind of hard to hold the drill, but I got it done. I lined the bottom with old newspaper and set my potato pieces. Covered them with old dirt from old potted plants. I have some coffee grounds to add. I have another potato to plant, covered with sprouts. I am curious to see how well they grow.

While getting out containers to freeze in I found a bag full of seed packets that I had put in the pantry, out of the way. I had totally forgot them. Found a bag of of onions, too, well sprouted. No telling what else I tossed in there when company was coming.

This morning I emptied out the vacuum cleaner. Now I know where all my hair is disappearing to. I must be vacuuming my skull because my hair is getting thinner in front and the bag was full of my graying tresses.

I have decided that along with losing hair I should lose some weight, as well. I had lost some after hurting me little arm, but Cousin Fat's back and brought some relatives, Aunt Cellulose and Uncle Adipose, to enjoy the ride. My goal is to get down to 140 lbs. Even then I will be over weight. Now that I can get outside and do a few things I may be able to shed the dread. I am still a bit limited in the things that I can do, but time heals most wounds and a little bit of activity is good, too. I am really too short to carry the extra poundage.

two is a number..2
too is a connection...like also.
everyone knows how to use "to"..I hope.

It is about to rain on my parade again. The 2(two) new florescent bulbs that were replace last night are not working today. That makes eight(8). Well Glenn Beck, whatcha gonna do?

I do not pick a certain time to post. I write when something occurs to me. I post mostly for family and friends or anyone who may be interested.
Thus it...

EARTH DAY

What are you doing for Earth Day? I am doing absolutely nothing. As far as I am concerned every day is Earth Day. Like old Ben said, "Waste not, Want Not. I try to use everything I bring into the house at least once or twice before it goes out the door and into the trash. Yes, I even darn my socks.

I try not to be a conspicuous consumer. Its not that I am a cheap skate, its just that I am conservative by upbringing and nature. Having limited funds in youth and even into adulthood makes we, the older generation, more attentive to discretionary spending. We watch what we spend money on and on what we buy, 'cause "Money doesn't grown trees." I am afraid that today's younger generation is learning this hard lesson first hand.

My leftovers do not go in the garbage. Leftovers go into the crock pot for soup. If I make too much soup it goes into the freezer. At the moment I am making Bean Soup in the crock pot. It has left over mashed potatoes and gravy in it as well as the beans, pieces of ham
and a few slices of bacon. I smell the onions cooking. When this pot is done I will have used up the leftovers and have more soup for the freezer.

I can not say I have never wasted anything because when I got home after surgery I had to toss a lot of food out of the fridge; it still bugs me that I had to do that.

I can darn socks on the sewing machine; yes I can! Most of my socks are in good condition except for the toes. You can "darn" by using a tight zig zag stitchon your sewing machine. Be sure that the stitch is on the outside of the sock(s) or the seam will rub on your toes. And when the socks finally do wear out they make good dust cover on the end of your duster..and they are washable too.

If you cut both ends out to a soup/vegetable can you can slip a small tomato plant into the can to prevent cut worms. Oh Boy, I am just a fountain of information...!

Every day is Earth Day. Use everything twice or as often as you can. Make it your Earth Day every day, too.

Lights Out

I take issue with GE and Sylvania fluorescent lights. They are supposed to be economical and last a long time, up to 700 hrs. They just don't make them to last very long anymore and they are no longer a bargain or save on utilities if you have to keep replacing them. My brother used to call it "Planned Obsolescence." Florescent tubes or bulbs are not all that cheap. I have had 6 replaced in the last few months. And now there is controversy about disposing them, so you can not win, coming or going.

It has gotten cold again and I turned the heat up. Here it is mid-April and I am still having to heat the house. Sat. is predicted to be about 80 degrees. Then it will be fans and air conditioning to run up the utility bill.

I had turned off the heat lamp for the little peepers. I hope they stay warm enough. The two juveniles(roosters) have become dare devils. When I go to feed them they try to get out(and have)so I have to scoop them up and put them back in their play pen. Where they go or what they try, the pullets think they have to copy.

There seems to be a local shortage on chicken wire because I still don't have any. I even tried posting on Freecycle for some. Someone else is doing the same.

The beans that started to sprout have mysteriously vanished. I saw a dove in the garden and it may be eating the seeds and sprouts. The only thing growing is the cabbage. Also, I saw a white feral cat checking out the chicks through the window. Those two little rooster better learn to protect their flock. Right now they are too tame and I can pick them up and shoo them back. They need to be a little aggressive so they won't wind up feeding the ca

My youngest sister called me early this morning and woke me up so now I am tired. She forgets there is a time difference between here and there. She is my youngest sister and even though she was born in 1958, has 2 grown children and 3 grandchildren, I still think of her as the baby of the family. Hey, I'm old..let me sleep!!

Bargins

I've been to the grocery store to buy some bargains that were advertised. I got 5 packages of bacon for five dollars. The packages were 12 ounces rather than 16 ounces, but that is still a good buy and already in the freezer. Maybe the oinkers didn't think so,but it to late for them to curls their tails and protest. Also, Chef Boy Arde' cans of pasta were were $5.00 for 5, marked down from $1.69, so I got 10 cans and mixed the varieties. Large cans of smoke flavored baked beans were also 5 for 5. I should have bought more than 5 cans, so I may go get more tomorrow. You know how I like those baked beans simmered in whiskey! The one thing I really needed was a package of TP; can't run out of that!

I am trying to wean the little feathered furies from eating constantly and wasting more than I put in the feeder. I pulled the feeder out so they learn to hunt, peck and scratch, which they are doing anyway in the paper shreds. After I got home I put the feeder box back in and it was an instant wild chicken rush for the box. They acted like the were starving and I was only gone a couple hours. It was a Frantic Feather stampede, really hilarious. BTW, eggs at the store were about $I.70 or thereabout, depending on which ones you bought.

My sister sent me a box of homemade candy eggs. I am trying to discipline myself, but it is hard. I try to eat only 1 per day..but I have a sweet tooth and I cheat and sometimes eat two.

Sunday

"Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray to God my soul to keep..."

I do not post on Sunday.
It is a day of rest.

Do only what you must
for even God rested
on the seventh day.

So sew

I used to be a fair seamstress...used to be. I need to do some sewing and repair work. One little task that needs attention is hems. My hems are coming out. I have favorite slacks, but can not wear them with the pant cuffs hanging. So I decided to get started on hems. I did get one pair of slacks hemmed...hummm. I do not have the fine motor control in my fingers and hands; not like I used to have. It is harder to thread a needle and hold it steady in order to get the job done. However, I did get the hem into one pair of slacks and it turned out fairly decent. Now, for the next pair.

I prefer to doing hand hemming to that of a sewing machine. There is a certain finesse to putting in a good hem. You need to just catch the material with the tip of the needle on the inside of the cuff and also the pant leg. When done right the treads of the hem shouldn't be visible on the outside of the pant leg. Also, it is a lot easier to use a good needle and not an old rusty needle as I did.

Sew onward! I would like to tailor a couple blouses that I bought at the Goodwill Store. They "sorta" fit, but I am a little bit on the short side, so the tails need to be cut down and re-hemmed. That part I will do in the machine because it is a bit quicker and we all like to get the jobs done, PDQ. I hope I can cut in a straight line. Hmmm, maybe I put too much whiskey into the baked beans...You think?

Chuck mowed and trimmed the yard so it is looking pretty good. Have opened a window in the chicken room again and the chickens love roosting in the window ledge. A lovely mess they are leaving and pecking away at the screen.

It will rain tonight and that will be good on the garden and I am saving chickappoo to put between the rows. I can tell that the weather is about to tear up and get soggy, for all that hardware I now adorn my inner beauty with, is now my barometer, thermometer and weather radar. I am just a walking antenna, so I must stay out of the rain. I wonder if anyone with plates, pins and screws ever got hit by lightning...LOL's!!! Maybe not so funny, but just think, free electricity!!

A day of sunshine

It has been a really nice day. No rain, slightly cloudy and warm. The humidity has not hit Western Ky. yet, but it will in short order. The little chicken pen has a window and a screen which is good because it was getting warm and stinky in there. After I got the room cleaned, Chuck, the handyman, got the window open and the peepers have had fresh air for the day. It is now time to close it because their beloved heat lamp has been turned off. They are now big enough to do without it at night.

I hope the chicken wire becomes available soon because they need to be out into the cruel, cruel world. The little rooster thinks he owns the universe he is in and is not afraid of much, pecking at my feet and chasing the other chicks. He could become a pet, but that isn't a good idea, is it?

My computer does the oddest things at times, including going to the sites or back to pages that I have already read. It slows down my blogging/writing.

Last night I was very tired. I went to bed at 9 PM and got up at 9 AM. It felt good to stay in bed. Usually I don't go to bed before 12 Am or thereafter. So, I guess the body knows what it needs.

It is time to feed the dinosaurs their last feeding. They seem to like banana skins, too, even though the Internet info. says that chickens don't like potato peels or banana peels either. So, what do the experts know anyway..yuk, yuk.

Weary

There are days when I am tired and do not want to write a word and this a weary day for me. I had to get up early and feed the chicks before going to Evansville. Chicks are like little babies; you have to take proper care of them no matter what's on the agenda. I didn't get home until just before 3 PM..so I had to make sure they had enough to eat before I left...just like little kids.

I took fried chicken in to the home where they took care of me after my boo boo and I couldn't do it(care for) myself. I made baked beans to take over which turned out really good. The corn bread didn't turn out as well. I guess the pan was to large for the mix. It wasn't terrible, but it was not my best effort in cooking. Remember, this is the home where I had worked for 32 years, so I sort of owed them some kind of tribute for thier care. Of course, they enjoyed fried chicken.

I don't know how I will get the wee feathered ones from the back store room to their new coop when it is finished. Do you think they will follow me like little chickie-dogs? The roosters are not afraid of my big feet because the get under foot. I have found that old coffee grounds help to keep the chicken poop odor down and they love to play in the shredded newspaper. I just fed them again and that is it for this day.

As noted I am tired and will go to bed early tonight. I have been falling asleep on the couch every day around 4:30 and missing the show I want to watch. Must be an age thing.

Wiskey 'n Beans

I'm making baked beans. I make mine a bit differently than the rest of the world. I put at least 1/2 cup of whiskey in the pot along with the regular ingredients of molasses, ham and sugar. I top it off with a few slices of bacon for good measure. Cook 'til I think it is done or to my taste. Pretty good. By the way, the whiskey will cook off; you won't get pie eyed.

The farm store is out of chicken wire...sold out. So, it will be a few days before the chicken run is finished. That's OK because it is still too cold for the chicks to go outside and we haven't caught the critters yet.

Odd as it may seem, I have two cook stoves, side by side. I like electric for cooking in the hot season and gas for when the weather is cold and damp. However, I think gas wins out for baking and any major cooking or large meals. It seems like electric ovens take forever.

I have been watching The Tea Parties on TV. We can be proud that all those crowds of Americans protesting or trying to be heard by our government, have assembled without bloodshed or violence. We are generally a nation of reason and law bidding citizens. Now, doesn't that make you proud? Does me. Go America!!!

APRIL COLD

I wish I had intelligent verbiage to write about, but I don't. It is below normal cold and I turned the heat up...again. tomorrow is supposed to be better. I hope so because the cold, damp weather makes the pins, screws and plates in my arm react the the change of temperature and humidity.

Chicken coop is getting close to done, if only the sun would shine long enough to paint the corrugated metal roof and sides. These are recycled metal sheets and do need to be painted as they are rusty. A good paint job will make it spiffy and new looking.

I need to get busy and get my taxes done tonight. I keep putting it off. Lazy me.

There is one blog that annoys me to no end. It is a highly negative site that condemns and has frequent tirades with vulgarity to spice it up. I would much rather read something more positive that offers solutions and/or good advice. I do not advocate violence and insurrection. I do believe in self defense and proper preparations for the unforeseen events that happen daily around the world.

PROGESSING

The chicken house is coming along quickly. It is made of mostly recycled materials. It has a recycled corrugated metal roof and sides. I have an old screen door that is being used for the chicken run. A good used door is being used for the hen house itself. A few new items had to be acquired , but even the old spring hinges are being used on the old screen door. Chicken wire is one thing I don't have and will have to be bought at the farm store. Once the old metal roof and siding are painted the whole structure will look pretty good and be very solid.

The little chickens are growing very fast. Some are a bit too brave and try to rush the door when I go to feed them. I can just hear them thinking, "This way to freedom, boys. Follow us!" The rooster is going to be a big boy, already twice as big as his harem. I think he might make a good Thanksgiving "Turkey."

I went to Wal-Mart to get ant traps and totally forgot them. The problem is that Wal-Mart is way too big and there is just too much to look at. At least I found a place to park today.

The cabbage in the garden is doing well, thus far. The beans are peaking their heads just out of the dirt. All the rain was good for them. The lettuce should appear next and soon. It is still too early/cold for some seeds to go into the ground, but it won't be long before the rest of the garden is in.

Last eve. my lap top did something odd. I couldn't get it to shut down. I wasn't blogging, just reading about chickens and stuff. Finally got it to shut down, but don't know how. I was afraid it was about to crash and I already went through that once. Once was more than enough. Those little chicks tire me out and I am yawning so it is time to end even though it is early in the even.

NO POST

"No news is good news," so there will be no posting on Sunday.

SHOPPING

Well, I have been out spending my money, but not foolishly. Rural King is having a sale on Chicken Scratch and bedding. The bedding is made of ground corn cobs. I had shredded a lot of old bills and ads/flyer's and paper to toss in the chick pen, too. They seem to like the shredded paper and are pecking it to see if it taste good. The chicks have decided that the paper pieces make a good place to snuggle under the heat lamp, too. Chuck, the handyman is outside building a chicken coop right now. It looks like it may be built stronger than my house! He has corrugated metal for the roof and a real door. He built the nesting boxes last week. It's good that he will have it done soon as the little mess makers are already learning to roost on top of a big box.

I did save 10% when I went out to the farm store. That came to $15.00, so you can tell where my money is going. Too bad it is just a one day 10% off sale. People must have a few dollars to spend because they had plenty of customers. One old gentleman had a coupon for $00.50 cents off on the item he wanted to buy. One person said he could use both the coupon and the 10% off deal at the same time and the cashier said he couldn't. I don't know how it worked out.

On the way home from shopping I stopped at Wendy's and got a Frosty. I promptly got a tooth ache. Well, I have a dentist appointment coming up in May...a good thing, I guess...

WET AND WILD

The rain came down in torrents. We had a tornado watch for awhile, but no tornadoes here. We were lucky again, but others were not so fortunate.

The chicks are eating about 3 lbs of starter per day and drinking lots of water. They are messy creatures, indeed!

When I went out to look at the critter trap...a critter was peering around it and watching me. I think it was the Woodchuck, but didn't get a good view as it moved away and behind the box. If it weren't raining I would have put more bait in the box...pumpkin seeds.

I bought a cordless pone because I get calls at the most unusual times, like when I am in the b.r. or trying to eat a meal. I didn't put it in my pocket so I had to run to the phone anyway. I'll get used to it.

I had planned to go shopping today, but between the storm and someone coming to check my PAP machine and O2 concentrator, I just didn't make it out.

There is another round of storms heading this way so it is time to shut down.

One Third

One third of the garden is in and just in time as it is raining a good steady rain. It is too early for some things because the weather continues to be cooler than average. Usually by the first of April I will have turned my furnace off for the season, but I turned the heat up this afternoon. I guess more rain is coming. The local weather man says it always rains on Good Friday.

Glenn Beck says everyone should keep a journal. Does a Blog count as a journal? Maybe you wouldn't want to put your innermost secrets or darkest thoughts in a blog, but some people actually do just that. Hmmm...I think my blog will be just a simple blog from a simple mind.

Lets talk about IRA's..I had one. Thanks to the Hole in the Wall Street Gang it is pretty much defunct. If I live to be 100 it may recover...Ha!..maybe. Now the President and his party of Swoop 'n Scoop are about to scoop up any and all traces of wealth and/or stability left over. Most of the Congress member are older men that will not have any future financial hardships because they have taken care of their bankrolls well in advance.

Most of us have forgotten that a lot of politicians could and should be impeached for the what they have been involved in, even if what they did was to only "close their eyes. "God Bless the Politicians because no one will.

I try to blog something every day, but sometimes I bore myself! I am not a great thinker or political expert. I just know that stupid chickens are smarter than some (a lot!!) of politicians.

I would be happy to hear any comments or suggestions from anyone.

CHANGES

I firmly believe that surgery changes the normal chemistry of the body human. It may be the drugs or the trauma to the flesh. When the body is under stress it wants to heal itself, sending little chemical and hormonal Carrier Pidgins to the wound or injury, saying "HEAL THY SELF..HEAL THY SELF." And that is why I have developed extra hair at the incision site on my arm and lost my memory. Has anyone seen my memory? I forgot where I put it.

This morning I forgot how to tread my sewing machine. I fiddled with it for an hour and finally got it properly threaded I would have referred to the owner's manual, but alas, I forgot where I put it. Then I had to thread the needle. I couldn't get through the eye of an needle even 'though I am not rich. Threading that needle took me another half hour. The little job I wanted to do..catch up a seem in my jeans so my undies wouldn't show..and it was windy and drafty out too...would have been a whole lot faster with just a plain ol' needle and thread.

There is a lesson here somewhere: First of all don't mislay your memory and secondly chose a simpler way of mending..although after all that travail the seam did look very good and it wasn't be open to the elements.

I went shopping this afternoon. I have decided that that cane is more trouble than it is worth. Even 'though the Therapist told me that I should always use a cane I decided that it wasn't worth the effort. The last store I went to...the cane stayed in the van. I am gonna wean myself off that thing.

One last note. If you find my memory, please mail it to me. My address is 1517..ummm...darn it, I forgot the rest!

CHICKEN FARMER-ME

I am watching the little chickens grow. It's far better entertainment than most TV. The little roosters are so curious and are developing tail feathers and growing "cones." Next week they will probably graduate from starter feed to scratch feed.

My sister called from Virginia asking how cold the weather was and if we had snow. Yes, it is cold for April and yes, we had snow flurries. If I wanted to be cold I would have gone back to NY state to live.

A friend of mine has become hooked on Bingo. The first time she went she won 1500 bucks. She wanted me to go with her last night, but I declined. My balance is not to be trusted now since I hurt my arm. My right arm basically dangles now and I have developed a fear of falling. My hand works, but can not reach my mouth..and that is bad for a person with a hearty desire for food!!

There isn't much to write about as I have been staying in, avoiding crummy weather. I have been out to the Dr's, but only 'cause I had to go. Now the Dr. is talking about an elbow joint replacement again, but I prefer to wait for fall weather...my arm, my choice. By than He will probably change his mind again. He will be equated to the little chickens: not knowing what he wants to do.

APRIL FARE

It's April in Western Kentucky. The weather should be warm. It isn't. This morning it was spitting snow. We have had more than our share of April showers in the past week. What happened to Global Warming? It's more like Global Cooling. The summers used to be horribly hot and humid: Now the summers are just hot and humid. The winters are getting longer and colder, too. Don't like it by much.

I should go shopping, but don't want to go out into a cold off and on drizzle. Maybe tomorrow.

The chicks are imprinting on me. When I go to feed and water them they at first flock to the door, then scramble over to the far corner. They flock right back when they see the food go into the dish and the water poured into the watering jar. In some ways they are smart and in other ways they are just dumb, little chicks. The are fun to watch, but I will not name them because at some point I may eat them

Another, probably the same, possum was in the trap. Next time it takes a trip to the State Park.

Chicks and Gardens

The little chickens are growing in leaps and bounds. Some are feathering out already.
They seem to be healthy and curious, making a mess of thier environment. Can't keep up with their appetites. Even the smallest one that I thought might not make it, is thriving.

A little of the garden is in. Chuck, the handyman, planted cabbage, red and white onions, today. The soil is still wet and other seeds and plants will have to wait. It looks like the weather will be turbulent and fickle for the next week.

Chuck made a nifty feeder out of scrap wood and built a gate out of old pallet wood. The gate looks better than the other gate. I hope the meter reader will have enough sense to close the gate when he comes around.

Now..what to do about the stray cats that roam the neighborhood.

Crime is increasing here and the local pawn shop and the audio store got hit last night. As people look for food or drugs the crime rate will soar. Guess I better get locks for the gates 'cause I don't want some one to get into the yard on a dark and windy night and get my little chicks or garden produce.

Tomorrow is Sunday. A day of rest and no blog will be forthcoming. LOL! No one reads it anyway!!

Baby Chicks

This afternoon I bought 25 baby chicks from Rural King. They are now happily ensconced on my back porch with chick starter, water and a heat lamp, They are so funny and cute..now. There are at lest 2 itty bitty bully roosters already trying for supremacy. Even with a heat lamp they have decided to huddle up together on the opposite wall. The Bully Boys want to be on top for all the warmth and to dictate pecking order.

I really didn't want 25 baby chicks, but that is the way you had to buy them. As I live in a town I didn't want to smell up the neighborhood. The Bully Boy Rooster may eventually wake up the neighbors. You know what roosters do in the morning!

If half these chicks produce I will have lots of fresh eggs and I will let them roam the garden eventually and devour bugs and insects. Their droppings can go into the garden later. If I am lucky enough to get too many eggs I can share them with others.

If chickens are properly cared for they will produce large eggs with hard shells and have yokes of rich yellow. Once they get a good start they are happy to eat anything including vegetable skins and scraps. You can use egg shells ground up in a blender to add to their water for the extra calcium that is needed to form hard shells on the eggs they will lay.

I am tired of going to the store to buy eggs that have very thin and/or cracked shells due to poor feed and forced/factory living in mega hen houses. I can raise them better, tastier and happier. Already these little chicks are enjoying the open space and some are even trying to fly(the bullies, of course).

I know not every city dweller has the luxury of having a garden or a few "pet" chickens, but try it if you can. It is educational for the young and even for some older people as well. Eggs don't just come a store in a carton.

The woodchuck lucked out. The box trap captured an Opossum instead. 'Possum was set free to roam as he pleased. Hope he is smart enough to stay away from the box trap. Really need to catch the woodchuck critter.

IPODS

Do you think the Queen of Englaaaand really wanted an IPOD? I wonder who thought that was an ideal gift for a woman in her 70's who could probably buy IPODS by the basketful's. Maybe she would rather have a nice thoroughbred from a prominent Ky. stable. I know I would! Maybe Berry wanted one and the First Lady wouldn't let him have one. You know, we subconsciously pick out presents and gifts the we would like to have. Makes you wonder about the Kid President, doesn't it?

I have nesting boxes now for little chickens that will grow up into big chickens. Either tomorrow of Saturday I will go get me some little fluff balls. They are on sale at Rural King for .59 cents each and may be even cheaper in a day or so. I heard that they are not selling well.

Have not seen the famous worm yet, but it may be crawling about out there in cyberland. So, now Homeland Security wants to take over the security of the Internet...hmmm.

I went the Dr. today and he said there may be other options for an arm that won't crank. I don't go back until Oct. and it will be under discussion then. I don't think surgery in the summer is a fun thing to undergo. I will wait.
